DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW UC Scout is a division of the UC Santa Cruz Extension. While UC Scout’s home campus is located at 3175 Bowers Avenue in Santa Clara, the UC Scout team is a fully remote team, with individuals making occasional visits to the campus as needed. UC Scout serves high school students, providing online high school courses for students and curricula for educators.

UC Scout’s growing team comprises six departments: instructional design, media, academics, support, outreach, and business intelligence. The team consists of approximately 50 full-time staff and 70 part-time employees. UC Scout works closely with UCSC Extension support staff, including IT, finance, and the office of the Dean to support UC Scout’s goals.

The Academic department is one of several that comprise UC Scout: Academic, Instructional Design, Media Production, Business Intelligence, Outreach, and Support. UC Scout offers a large catalog of asynchronous courses designed to allow students to move through the content and assignments at their own pace. Part-time teachers are available to support students, grade assignments, and provide general feedback Responsibilities Complete all steps in the Scout Teacher Training Course for course setup. Monitor and respond to student academic integrity incidents flagged by the the virtual exam proctoring service.

Effectively communicate with UC Scout colleagues. Utilize the Canvas Inbox tool for communicating with students Attend virtual teacher informational meetings occasionally, or watch recordings if unable to attend live. Review student course evaluation feedback after each term.

Report any discovered course content errors. DAILY Log into each course every business day for regular interaction in the course/s. Grade assignments within five days of submission.

Respond to emails and assignment submission comments from students within one business day. WEEKLY Monitor student progress weekly and communicate with students and their families or other supportive parties. Update student communication tracker and grade log weekly.

Host weekly one-hour sessions via Zoom that students can opt into if they desire live interaction with their teacher. Requirements Proof of a single-subject California credential. Experience teaching high school courses.

Ability to devote at least 5 hours per week to responding to completing the duties of this position. Remote workspace with a computer and stable, high-speed internet access for video conferencing. Effective organizational and time management skills.

Proficiency in using email, learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Google Classroom, Schoology), and other relevant communication tools. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in grading and feedback. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to collaborate with colleagues and maintain professional relationships. Ability to provide fast feedback and turnaround within 24-48 hours. Payment Compensation is determined by a contract that factors in the number of student enrollments assigned.

The compensation per term can range from $0 to $25,000. UC Scout provides courses in three terms: Fall, Spring, and Summer. Chosen candidates will be required to complete the Scout Teacher Training Course.
